Healthy dessert alternatives for your child

We live in an age of processed and modified foods, so maintaining a healthy diet for your children can feel like a challenge. When it comes to a healthy diet, sugar is often the biggest battle for parents and their kids.

But it doesn't have to be.

Rather than trying to stop your child from eating dessert, teach him or her to gravitate towards healthy options. With the following ingredients, you can make an array of treats, minimize your child's sugar intake, and satisfy their cravings.

Almond milk

Almond milk is nutritious and has a naturally sweet flavor. Try using it to make rice pudding, and add a dash of vanilla extract. Top with raisins and cinnamon for a delicious, smooth dessert. Your kids will love it, no added sugar necessary!

Cacao powder

Turn anything into chocolate with this stuff! Try a yogurt chocolate mousse: just add some cacao powder to either plain or vanilla yogurt. If you go for plain, add some sugar because, contrary to belief, cacao isn't naturally sweet.

Fruit

Some fruit is so rich in natural sugar that your child won't think twice when it's presented as a dessert. Instead of buying your child a popsicle full of artificial coloring and tons of processed sugar, make your own at home by blending your fruit(s) of choice with yogurt.

Showing your children that there is a way to eat dessert that is both healthy and satisfying will get them excited about making positive food choices!
